I'm working on a character who's essentially. a young Githyanki who failed and got left behind on their Illithid-hunt test. They're now obsessed with proving themselves (namely by killing a mind flayer or retrieving a lost silver sword) and travel to Tu'Narath alone, if need be. They're going to start of as very typically Gith, but I plan on having them eventually start to realize that the propaganda is wrong, and start to appreciate their fellow party members. My problem is how to roleplay them until that character development sets in. As I said, I want them to have the standard Githyanki personality. Views lesser races as cattle, hates slavery more than anything, but is slavishly devoted to Vlaakith. The main differences is that they're secretly self-conscious, and worried that they have failed their rite of passage. But that's obviously a very assholish personality, and I don't it to be so bad that the other players are uncomfortable. Any ideas on how to make them likable and a racist dickbag at the same time?
(Also, for the curious: They'll be a War Wizard or Bladesinger/Kensei monk multi class, to make them sort of an improvised Gish that lack proper Tu'Narath training)
My two cents: base them off of a character from pop-culture that fits the bill. May I direct you to this page on TV Tropes (a site I frequent for NPC and character help as a DM) https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GoodIsNotNice.
The Trope: Good is Not Nice
Zuko from Avatar TLA comes to mind. You can make them someone who, though they say things that are racist/assholish, their ACTIONS are good. That is the key.
