So my lack of an ability to continue my campaign I was running due to anxiety of using roll20 to DM long story not getting into it... Kinda caused an issue with our group playing until one member said he wanted to DM for the first time which we are all cool with and he is great with his voice acting and what not.
Anyways me and a buddy are making siblings, he is going to be a changeling sorcerer and I am thinking a firbolg since I want a giant race and firbolg seems more fun than goliath then either barbarian or fighter for a class. we both were found by our parents and raised together as a family. I plan for my Firbolg to have a personality mix between Braum from league of legends and Escanor from seven deadly sins friendly and a bit prideful always going for the heroic option to flaunt his str. I am struggling to figure out class though because I need to be on the frontline since our party is a sorc, rogue AT, and a fighter gunslinger.
I have been looking at rune knight but I haven't heard much talk about it like the other UA subs, my personal issue with fighter is that it feels like if you lose your armor and weapon you are screwed... our group has only played about roughly less than a year so our experience is limited. I never played a fighter so I could be wrong but it seems at least a barb can use a makeshift weapon, rage, grapple an enemy into a wall, ect where as a fighter can do a lot unless they end up naked then they are basically advanced peasant... This is kinda why I normally like casters due to their ability to adapt to worst case scenario because I like to be able to adapt with rp and creative thinking. It's kinda why my favorite barbarian is a bear totem using a race with powerful build as a concept because I can think of many ways to use that alone creatively after reading it.
Any advice would help a lot please and thank you to all those who know far more than I do and can help me!
P.S. Not playing pally or cleric.... tried cleric and ended up too awkward to rp, and paladin annoys me with the need to follow the oath...
Eh I tried getting into the idea of moon druid but eh for me and I know people will disagree but it is more work than fun for me lol. Like the idea, one player was a druid and she was entertaining to have around but not my kind of caster/frontliner.
Well if you want to be a fighter and have some versatility I would consider going with an eldritch knight. Or look into the echo knight, they are pretty cool. Now let’s get weird...
If you are worried about optimization then you may have to consider a different race, but screw optimization. 3 levels of warlock in pact of the blade or he blade (I forget which allows you to use your CHA stat for your weapon attacks) then go eldritch knight after that. You may not be able to have a high INT unless you roll crazy stats, if that is the case just take spells like shield or anything that doesn’t rely on being boosted by INT.
other than that I can’t think of anything that fits exactly what you’re looking for. I guess that is kinda point though, fighter isn’t supposed to be like casters.
If your concern is how the character handles loosing all their gear, maybe look at kensai monk. No armor needed, if you have a weapon you can basically use it as a shield, limited but ki gives you a bonus action Dodge. Uses wisdom which you get as a firbolg anyway.
I like Paladin. Seems a good fit for his personality, and high STR, and keeps you on the front line. Plus it gives you Lay on Hands, so you get that quick Stim Pak when needed.

Moon Druid.
It's pretty fun turning into a bear or giant toad. Walking on a ceiling as a giant spider...or turning into anything really.
I also like the fluff of hey sibling you're not wired I turn into things too with this option

Autocorrect: he blade = hexblade
