I'm a somewhat new dm, having done a ton of research but only actually getting to dm a half a dozen times. My brother and I had the idea that we could do a one player campaign with me dming for him, as so we've been working on setting that up.
He's playing as a level one elf druid with mental issues, who's main goal is to scream at squirrels- the more the better. I'd like to set him off on his adventure with a good start, hoping to give him a cloak of useful items for one of his first quests, but I'm struggling to come up with engaging quest ideas that dont involve much combat for him. His adopted parents are kicking him out of their home away from society to start his own story. If you guys have questions I'd love to answer them, and if you have ideas I'd be more than happy to hear them. :)
You could come up with an encounter with another traveler who is searching for something (that doesn't involve combat) and the traveler offers some small piece of useful gear in exchange. You could consider some sort of forest spirit that makes him solve some sort of puzzle or riddle to be allowed into a certain part of the forest, etc. In addition to helpful gear, you can always use inspiration as a reward for role playing (i.e. screaming at enough squirrels). Never underestimate having that one extra d20 to use in an early combat situation!
Also, I love the idea about the squirrels, in part because it reminded me of this old commercial, the end of which I still find hilarious.

Give him a sidekick or pet to aid in combat.
Send him acorn hunting. He finds a squirrel guarding their winter cache. Does he fight, talk, or yell...
Ooh, I like it! Thanks!!
