I'm thinking of buying a tablet exclusively for DDB and reading. Two criteria:
1) Light enough overall to kick back and comfortably read a DDB adventure book.
2) Big enough screen that I can DM--I use DDB Encounters and like being able to lock the Game Log open without obstructing the stat blocks. Don't want a tiny VTT either.
Anybody have recommendations based on personal experience?
Well you've got some very specific criteria there. If it were me, I'd go with a surface pro tablet and have an extra monitor around for when I DM. It would also be able to handle more open tabs and such which can start to bog down performance on other devices. It kind of gives you the best of both worlds between tablet and laptop.
My girlfriend has one and it is the perfect size and it is possible to add a physical keyboard/mouse to it.
You can also go for a different brand ofcourse.
But i gotta say, D&D Beyond is browser based and the app is not that heavy, even with multiple books. So an exclusive tablet for this stuff feels very excessive.
If you combine it with more daily apps and stuff like drawing/presenting maps then it would be more ‘justified’.
I wouldn't want to run a game on a tablet, especially if running online on a VTT. Even with my laptop, external screen and tablet combined I still prefer having my DM screen, notepad and a bunch of paper documents so I probably don't present the best benchmark case, but still. Audio quality is also a concern, even if you can use a decent headset with a tablet. I'd go with a laptop (you can kick back with one of those too, right?) and use it for other stuff too, or preferably look for affordable versions and buy both.

I would say an iPad Pro sized tablet.
