My DM isn’t letting us multiclass, so I’m trying to make a strong built without any multiclassing to get back at him for it. I have an idea for a Battle Smith Artificer Warforged, focused around AC and smite spells, but I’m trying to find ideas for what to do with my backup if the artificer somehow dies
In all honesty you shouldn't be trying to "get back" at your DM. You're not really supposed to be playing against your DM, you're supposed to be playing with them, having fun... If you have issues with the restrictions put upon the players, try to talk it out and come to a compromise where everywhere can be somewhat happy. I'm not trying to scorn you or anything.. I'm just saying that you shouldn't start out your campaign on hostile grounds with your co-players.
Battle Smith is a very cool class/subclass. We have a battle smith in our group it seems to be both a versatile and powerful character, and honestly he's not missing multiclassing at all.
What kind of character were you looking to make with multiclassing that was spoiled by the restriction put upon you? Perhaps we can help you reach a similar character without multiclassing
I was trying to do a mixed phantom rogue/light cleric build based on using warding flare, uncanny dodge, and evasion (among others) to keep the character out of danger while they deal sneak attack damage
Well to go with a similar concept, I'd suggest a goblin (for Nimble Escape which is similar to rogue feature) and I'd say any type of paladin (except Oath Breaker because it doesn't thematically fit with a light cleric) for substantial one-shot damage from the smites, and you get access to smite spells, channel divinities, aura of protection incase your Nimble Escape bonus action isn't an option. You'd get fighting style, extra attack, Oath spells, and a powerful built in healing feature in Lay on Hands. You'd get access to all armor and shields as well as simple and martial weapons. If you feel like going for a high AC build as well, you could still go Warforged, take the Protection fighting style for a natural +2 bonus on top of heavy armor and a shield but you'd still have a high AC as a Goblin as long as ya take the Shield of Faith spell for a +2 bonus as well as for your party. If you similarities to your build is a concern, then I'd suggest the Crown, Devotion, and Glory Paladins. You can make an incredible character with any class/subclass combination and I'd suggest playing something that you'd find fun as well as comfortable so as to have the best experience with the game but hopefully this helps to some degree.
