copper pieces are pennys, silvers are dimes and golds are loonies (canadian one dollar coins if you dont know) (and platinums would be a $10 coin.)
think about it:
10 pennys are worth 1 dime and 10 dimes are one dollar
10 copper are worth 1 silver and 10 silver are one gold.
(yeah l know canada does not use pennys anymore, but they still exist, and they are made of copper.)
l dont know if this is something commonly known, its just a brain blast l had last night.
Additionally, half-dollars would be equivalent to an electrum piece (1ep = 5 sp iirc).
Partway through the quest for absolute truth.
The coppers to pennies comparison has been made before. There is even at least 1 subtle reference to it in the rules. Detect thoughts has a material component of 1 copper piece as in "A penny for your thoughts."
True, but in D&D economy-land it would be more like a copper is $1, a silver is $10, a gold is $100, and a platinum is like throwing around $1,000.

Accurate.
