If i was to act first and i have 2 hand crossbows and fired them both and i roll 2 nat 20s wouldn't that make both use the assassnate ability or would it just pop with the first and then just crit with the 2nd as normal? I know that a nat 20 is a critical hit anyway so i think both would critical hit and then roll damage am i right in this?
The rule for Assassinate states that "In addition, any hit you score against a creature that is surprised is a critical hit.", so, if the creature was surprised, both hits would be critical, regardless of your actual dice rolls.
Both are just normal crits at this point and all assassinate does is give advantage on attacks if you act before target. Assassinate only autocrits surprised creatures.
