A friend of mine is looking to create a character for an upcoming campaign. He can’t decide on a race/class combo that gives him what he wants. He’s looking for a strong mix between fighting and magic, and refuses to play as a human (ikr). He’s stuck between eldritch knight, rogue, ranger and hexblade but is open to different ideas. Help? 😂
I'm envisioning a warrior swinging a sword in one hand and tossing a fire bolt with the other. Eldritch knight, or Hexblade would fit the bill. Maybe Bloodhunter? That or any martial/spell caster multiclass.
Unless they multiclass I'd pass on any class that doesnt have cantrips. So no Paladin or Ranger. Both are great though.
As for race it doesnt matter you can make anything work in 5e. How far removed from human do they want?
He has considered it, he’s not a huge religious oath fan :/ Thanks though!
First, it is not necessarily a "religious" oath (anymore). Second, if they multiclass after 2 levels, they get the armor, the weapons, the fighting style, the smites, and (some of) the spells without having to pledge any oaths. From there bard college of swords is a good way to pickup even more magic swordsman tricks.

Paladin?
High elf bladesinging wizard?
Paladin is THE magic swordsman class. Eldritch knight is runner up.
Hexblade warlock is theoretically a good swordsman, but it is easier to build around ranged spells.
College of sword bard might actually be a better sword class than warlock.
He can also multiclass. Paladin sorcerer or artificer wizard are 2 of my favorites. Paladin bard also possible.

Blood Hunter’s a good shout. They don’t like the whole default human character use, so literally anything except :)

That's a really good idea actually, I'll let them know. Thanks :)
