I'm new to D&D Beyond. I'd like to use this site to store and tinker with my Fantasy Grounds characters. Do I need a subscription for that? Do I need to buy the books again? Thanks.
Depends. DnDB gives you tons of resources for free, but not everything will be accessible. As far as I know anything you've previously purchased either physically or digitally from other sources will not be accessible. Therefore will have to be repurchased to function on this site.
I'm always hesitant buying digital goods since to it's not a tangible item.
Also this site has limitations. Once DnDB is the one stop for all my digital gaming needs they can have my money. I'm personally waiting on a virtual table top or something similar.
You don't need a subscription as long as it is below a certain # of characters (6, I think?). But you only get access for free to the D&D Basic Rules.
Otherwise, this site is the same as fantasy grounds. It is a 3rd party vendor that operates under license from WOTC, so they want you to buy everything again from them -- it's how their business model works. For instance, if you want stuff that is in PHB but not the basic rules, you need to buy PHB. If you want stuff on your character sheet from XGE, you have to buy XGE, and so on.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
You'll get the physical products plus a 50% off coupon for the Player's Handbook on D&D Beyond. Finally, you also get access to the D&D Beyond Essentials Kit Bundle for free via an included coupon.
Buying the physical essentials kit is great just -- don't get used to that. You won't be getting DDBeyond coupons for anything else that you physically buy.
