Let's say i want to see the progression of an army or what is going on on the battlefield.
You create an Invisible sensor within range in a location familiar to you (a place you have visited or seen before) or in an obvious location that is unfamiliar to you (such as behind a door, around a corner, or in a grove of trees).
Obviously this kind of thing you should always verify your DM, but I would certainly argue that at the worst, "five hundred feet above me" qualifies as an obvious location that is unfamiliar to you.
It is a bit limited by the openness of the area. It won't spot a hunting party of elves moving through the trees, but it could spot a phalanx marching in a field.

Why is it unfamiliar? The spell specifies that a familiar place is a place you have visited or seen before. Just look up, and... ta da! It's a familiar location!

Yeah, I think this would work no problem.
