I am pretty new to online stuff. Made my account a while back and never used it.
Due to the whole black plague 2.0, my game got out right cancelled, wonderful! Now I am here to try to and find the ropes before I learn them. So I have to ask, what do people use as a map substitute? I tried using Roll20 for everything it was just a little.. clunkier than I can handle.
Do people have a go to on here for such a thing or is roll20 the usual spot? Do people even use both here and there in tandem or just go without maps on here?
Any other resources would be appreciated, thanks in advance. Sorry if this is the wrong place.
I use roll20 for the map and the Beyond 20 Chrome extension so I can use DnD Beyond for pretty much everything else and it just puts all the rolls etc. into Roll20 for you. Discord for voice.
My group right now (only 2 sessions in) is using Google Hangouts for video chatting and doc sharing, D&D beyond for character sheets, and Astral for mapping.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.

We use Zoom (in the free version your "meetings" are limited to 40 minutes, but you can test it to see if it's worth to subscribe).
I've ended up with a two-screen set-up (as DM). I share one screen with the players, and use it as our "table". I import the maps top photoshop, and just drag the window onto the shared screen. It's at least quite simple and stable. I either just copy the maps from the campaign or find some online. If you DON'T move the map on the shared screen, the players can actually draw on it. You also have an option to share a "whiteboard" where everyone can draw, but don't expect great visuals :-)
We uses improved initiative for initiative (and have a window with players view of that on the "table"-screen). For dice we have tried "roll dice with friends" which worked great in the beginning, but i suspect it is kind of overloaded at the moment (obvious reasons). With one group, we simply roll dice and trust each other.
My group, even though we have a VTT in Astral, mostly rolls dice on the table in our house and trust each other (one guy seems to like doing it in Astral so I let him).

I agree, but what an online dice-roller actually added was some of the "tension" of sitting around a table. It's a lot more fun to roll a 20 when all can see it. Kind of feels more satisfying. But as I said, we ended up rolling for ourselves and trusting each other because the page har been quite troublesome since beginning of easter...

I agree all seeing it is fun too. But personally I like the feel of rolling physical dice.

World Anvil is pretty good. I don't personally use it, but I know a few DMs who have made some pretty cool maps with it.
