I was going to say maybe it was Mammon's symbol, since he forges the coins, but it's not.

yeah, pretty sure its the letter Z...maybe coins are minted with the symbol of the current ruler.

which means there might be older coins still in circulation with prior rulers' emblems.

I bet there’s some nerd demon who collects old coins from previous avernus rulers...like he gets extra excited when he sees a coin with a B on it instead of a Z

and would pay about anything for one with a T on it.

yeah, i was going down that path also...I have two campaigns going...Strahd and a homebrew - was thinking what's next for both of them as they're both probably ending around level 11-12.

I don't think a demon would be a collector of rare soul coins though...they probably care about what's in the coin, not the coin itself. But that doesn't mean other races wouldn't collect them...think maybe like the Collector in Avengers (we have a warlock who has a version of him as his Patron).

So Bel and Zariel swapped places as ruler of the first layer a couple times I believe...before that, it looks like Tiamat ruled the first layer for awhile.  So of the 3, coins with a T would be rarest...google can't seem to tell me who ruled Avernus before Tiamat.

Its kinda weird that the coins are currency for all the layers of hell, but the ruler of the first layer is the one that gets their emblem stamped on the coins (by someone in the third layer)...maybe its a job perk.
