As a parallel to the species/subspecies thread w/a similar name, I'm going to start a class/subclass version of the same idea!
My picks for subclasses..
Brought Back:
SHEPHERD DRUID NEEDS A REWORK BAAAAD.
Bilgewater subclasses
Tempest Cleric
Storm Sorcerer
Redemption Paladin
Fate Cleric
Satire Bard
Primeval Druid
The OG take on Strixhaven subclasses designed by Dan Dillon that were mangled into backgrounds by other designers, causing Silvery Barbs to no longer be a subclass ability, but a spell.
Introduced:
Some kind of Firefighter Ranger who can put out fires w/water and/or fight fire WITH fire
Sugar, Coffee and/or Tea-themed Sorcerer
Juggler Bard
Knife-throwing Bard or Rogue
Playing Card throwing/tapping Rogue
Food-themed Artificers(Baker, Patisserie, Candy maker, soda jerk, and/or chef) who can feed the party and energize them
Prism or Color Sorc/Wizard which can learn 2 of 3 cantrips for free:Light, Dancing Lights and/or Prestidigitation, as well as Color Spray, with the option to cast it prof. bonus/day w/o material components, in addition to Glyph of Warding, Symbol, both of the Prismatic spells, & specializing in Radiant damage & altering colors of spells to alter their damage into harmless/minimally harmful damage types
Solarsmith Artificer who uses light, then the Light & Dancing Lights cantrips at night, to power their devices, focusing on Radiant Damage
For classes: Brought Back:
Shaman
Mystic
Introduced:
A Green Lantern(& other Emotional Spectrum colors)-inspired half-caster class that uses empathic senses to bring ambient emotions to life, making temporary energy constructs(Thus never needing to buy weapons) and perform wonders at the risk of losing control and/or exhaustion, with more than 7 subclasses.
(Might create a spell-themed version of this thread sometime next week)
With occasional exceptions, most 5.0 subclasses remain usable in 5.5. Quite a few could benefit from a bit of re-tuning to balance them with more modern subclasses, though. Thus, my priorities would be the missing PHB Cleric domains (Nature and Tempest) and pretty much everything in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything. There are a lot of iconic subclasses in Xanathar’s, but quite a few of them seemed underpowered even in a 5.0 context.

Once made Maxwell's Silver Hammer come down upon Strahd's head to make sure he was dead.
Always study & sharpen philosophical razors. They save a lot of trouble.
