When asked why he loves humans so much, a character responds like this.
Ask any of my kind what they want, and they will tell you, just the usual. Hundreds of grandchildren, complete dominion over the known world, and the pleasure of knowing that their enemies have all died in a series of "happy accidents," that can in no way be traced back to them.
That is how my people see themslves. As conquers and heroes. As living gods, warrior-poets who roam the the vastness of time, bringing, beauty and art, music and phiosophy, magic and civilisation to the forgotten people and places of the world.
Remind you of anyone?
My kind belives with all their hearts that they gloriously go, where others fear to tread; and maybe that was true, once, long ago when the world was young, but look at us now - look at what; in our arrogance, we have become - cowards and bullies who prey on the weak and kill each other for sport. We are no longer glorious, no longer god-like but even as we have fallen, so another has risen to take our place.
You ask me why I have such love for humans, but let me ask you this. How could I not love your kind, when you are now everything that we used to be?
So, what race do you think that monologue best fits?
I can't wait to see what you all think.
Foxes XD

A caffeinated nerd who has played TTRPGs or a number of years and is very much a fantasy adventure geek.
I can imagine either a really charismatic orc warchief or one of the goblinoids, what with all the focus on fighting, conquering and defeating enemies.
It sounds like someone Netherese? It's legitimate for any decadent or fallen empire. Doesn't have much to do with race except to the extent that some ancient empires were predominantly one race or another.
This is the standard trope for all "older than Humans" races really. Actual Gods, vestiges, dragons, elves and dwarves, on and on. All have been at the pinnacle of achievement and taken a fall.

The warrior-poet part doesn't work for Orcs or Goblins. They don't just want to take over everything and have lots of babies, they out-and-out see themselves as the superior race/culture that others should submit to or be destroyed. Easily fits a Hobgoblin Warlord.

I love all of your answers, so I thought that I would give you some more details. This characters name would be, Clarion Dietrich. Here is what the parts of his name mean.
Clarion
A real-world "Clarion" is a common name for a trumpet in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It also is used as a name for a 4' organ reed stop.
Dietrich
In the real world, Dietrich is an ancient German name meaning "Ruler of the People".
The Story
As a young man, Clarion earned the title "Red Dawn" for his bravery and prowess in battle, and became known as, Clarion of the Red Dawn. In the early days, when he still lived with his people, Clarion was considered to be one of the noblest of his kind. He was undoubtedly one of the most desirable. His peers looked upon him with reverence and pride; the young were awestruck by his great might, and looked upon him as a role model, while the women; seeing him as a superior mate, clamoured to have his children. However, Clarion had fallen in love with a young human serving girl and her with him. For almost a year the pair would meet in secret. It wasn't a crime for them to be friends, but Clarion's family would not have approved of his relationship with her, especially as for the love of a human, he had turned down many matches to a female of his race. She would tell him stories passed down to her by her grandfather, and he would teach her how to fight; how to use a blade, and how to defend herself, but teaching her to fight, proved not to be a good idea.
Early one morning, after her secret rendezvous with Clarion, Kari, was walking home when a young male of Clarion's race attacked her. Using the skills that Clarion had taught her, she fought back and ended up killing him. Upon doing so, the Nightwatch immediately accosted her. They had seen the whole thing but had chosen not to intervene in a young man asserting his dominance over a female of what they considered a lesser race. They would not stand for a human, a human female no less, killing one of their own, however, and threw her jail. When Clarion heard what had happened, he tried to defend his lover, but the boy she had killed was one of the nobility and his family pushed hard for and won the girls execution. Clarion launched an appeal for clemency on her behalf, stating again that she was only defending herself and trying to put forward her version of events, but made no headway.
The boys family wanted revenge, not justice, and they were using their position and name to bully everyone is into complicity.
Clarion; however, could not let his people kill his lover - especially not when she had done nothing but defend herself against an attacker using the skills that he himself had taught her.
The night before her execution, he broke her out of jail. The guards tried to stop him, and he fought them, disabling, but not killing them. He then escaped with his lover into the night. When the guards came to, they raised the alarm, and some of the Nightwatch pursued them, intent on bringing them back. Only one of them managed to catch up with them, however, and Clarion fought and killed him before escaping into the desert with Kari.
That was it, he had made his choice, and now there was no going back.
When the people learned of Clarion's betrayal, they fell into a state of mourning. His people sent scouts to find him and offer him amnesty if he returned with the girl and handed her over. He would have to pay for what he had done of course with a loss in status and rank, but he was, after all, one of the best of them, and they wanted him back.
None was successful. Clarion and his lover vanished into the desert without a trace, and with that, his people gave him a different name; no longer would he be, Clarion of The Red Dawn. From then on, his people would know him as, Clarion of Loss.
They never gave up hope, however, that one day he would be found and returned to them.
I'd like to point out that "Dietrich" is not only a somewhat rare name, but also the german word for "lockpick". I doubt anyone who didn't research the name's origin would associate it with "ruler of the people", much more with a nickname for a common thief.
If you want a german name that sounds like nobility, "König" (king) is actually a common family name. "Herzog" (meaning "Duke") also is a common name.
Or you could borrow one of the actual noble names. "Habsburger", "Karolinger", "Staufer", "Wittelsbacher" etc. (the actual names would be like "Clarion of Habsburg" or "Clarion of Stauf" etc.). Just in case one of your players understands German and you don't want Clarion to be marked as criminal by his name. ;-)
