I've been playing a 4e game with my group for many, many years. My current character is a Wizard with the ability to summon ghosts. This wasn't really possible in 4e per se, but there were many summonable creatures, so we just reflavored them.
We're finally moving from 4e to 5e, but keeping the same characters. I'm trying to rebuild a character that can summon ghosts, but I always try to do it within the RAW before moving to reflavoring/homebrew. Is there anyway for a character to summon ghosts, or command a ghost in 5e? (I'm a 10th level human, but I'm not tied to being a Wizard)
Well I feel like spells like Animate Dead and Create Undead are really what you want to base your character around. These spells are capable for wizards and warlocks. They are currently play testing new summoning spells in as UA over at WoTC, so you may want to also look into the Summon Undead Spirit spell, and the like. As for subclass mechanics, there are a few good choices. Necromancy Wizard seems to fit most readily, but you could also try Undying Warlock (or really any warlock). Additionally, Death Domain Cleric can give you Animate Dead and is still in flavor. You could also try Shadow Sorcerer or Circle of Spores Druid, but the flavor is a bit off.

I wonder who first introduced the word flavor into D&D.
