Hello, I am building a cleric PC but need some assistance in the available spells. If I am correct, the Cleric get 4 spell slots at 1st level....but how many spells can he list as possible spells. Is it 4, the total # of spells to use, or can he list other spells that his/her deity would allow.....just trying to settle a rule question since Clerics do not have to, quote, memorize spells as they are granted through there deity?? Thanks!
The Cleric table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your cleric spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell’s level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.
You prepare the list of cleric spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the cleric spell list. When you do so, choose a number of cleric spells equal to your Wisdom modifier + your cleric level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
For example, if you are a 3rd-level cleric, you have four 1st-level and two 2nd-level spell slots. With a Wisdom of 16, your list of prepared spells can include six spells of 1st or 2nd level, in any combination. If you prepare the 1st-level spell cure wounds, you can cast it using a 1st-level or 2nd-level slot. Casting the spell doesn’t remove it from your list of prepared spells.
You can change your list of prepared spells when you finish a long rest. Preparing a new list of cleric spells requires time spent in prayer and meditation: at least 1 minute per spell level for each spell on your list.
____________
So, Cleric-Level + WIS Mod spells prepared, and you know all cleric spells from the cleric spell list plus the extended domain spell list.
The only thing I would add is your domain adds spells that ypu have permanently prepared and do not count towards spells known.
For example the if you are the 3rd Level Cleric with 16 Wisdom Voras mentioned and have life domain he would always have prepared:
Bless
Cure Wounds
Lesser Restoration
Spritual Weapon
You would then be able ot choose six other 1st and 2nd level spells each day to add to your permanently prepared spells
Cantrips are a little different you start with 3 cantrips known, which you can cast as often as you like without using a spell slot but you can not swap them out each day. At 4th level you get to add a 4th cantriop and at 10th level a 5th.
