If you wear armor that you lack proficiency with, you have disadvantage on any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can't cast spells.

While you don't get every proficiency, you DO get any bonus proficiencies granted by a sub-class you choose. When you multi-class to Cleric, IF you choose a domain that grants a bonus Heavy Armor proficiency for choosing that domain, like Life cleric, you get that proficiency. In other words, you get it if it's a feature of the sub-class you choose, not a base proficiency granted by the class.

Barbarian don't get heavy armor, but after multi-classing into Cleric - Life Domain the subclass offers Heavy Armor.
The proficiency is not part of the Cleric level "1" proficiencies, as it is a subclass add-on instead.
I thought that it is possible to wear Heavy then, but the character sheet shows it with a "D" mark for disadvantage.
Is it a bug for D&D-Beyond, or truly unavailable by the multi classing mechanism?
Heavy armor imposes disadvantage on stealth checks whether you are proficient or not
Thanks! just being a noob. I thought the "D" refers to wearing it, thanks for teaching me its for stealth.
You don’t get all of your new class’ proficiencies. So you have disadvantage in wearing heavy armor. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Multiclassing

Also, check your proficiencies. If heavy armor is in there, then the D is just for stealth.
