Making a caster focusing on poison and necrotic (Ik, resistance will hurt) stuff, flavoring spells as gadgets and stuff, like fireball as a grenade, stuff like that. I'm thinking scribe wizard to switch damage types (DM allows UA) or warlock, with patron flavored as some mob boss that made me an offer I couldn't refuse. What spells, classes, etc. do you recommend and any other fun flavor bits would be appreciated too.
If you want some homebrew then you could invest a couple of feats to get versions of Elemental adept for Posion and Necrotic to get around the resistances side of things.
Roleplay wise I'd push it towards the mad inventors of the Skaven from Warhammer (this could also work for a Artificer/Alchemist), have a fail that emits noxious fumes, grenages that blow up and flavour them as things like a posion version of burning hands for the fail and necrotic or posion version of fire ball for the grenade. You can also do a version of lightning effects, any reference to a skaven and warp lightning just amend to abyssal lightning and have it deal posion or nectoric damage instead of lightning. Flavour spells with the cosmetic effects of grenade style weapons or a barrel strapped to your back with a flamethrower style weapon attached to it.
If you want to go for a Cleric or Warlock version then a patron like Talona from the forgotten realms setting would likely be your best bet (or Nurgle again from Warhammer flavoured as a Great Old One)
Any race could work so its really just whaever floats your boat theme wise. backgrounds with some sort of research or medicine slant would work.

I'd go for Wizard Necromancer but then I am biased (https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/class-forums/wizard/48896-necromancy-primer-part-4-a-study-of-two-of-the)
