For those wondering what this might be, its part of an out of character/in character thing I'm doing to illustrate some different ways of playing/portraying Necromancers, the first few parts are linked below.
Right, on to part 11....Note: Well folks this is the last part, thank you for reading whatever parts you did, I hope this brought a few new ideas to you lovely players and DM's on portraying Necromancers....and now onto the last type of necromancer......
The final sect of Necromancy: The Undead Fan.
Disclaimer...(places head in hands and shakes head) please brothers and sister necromancers, I tried to hold off on this for as long as possible but for the love of necromancy kill any of these practitioners you find!
These practitioners care nothing for creating or summoning undead, nor do they care about furthering the art of necromancy or schooling other spell casters in its use, these..."wizards".... love undead, they love their powers and think they are just amazing and the Undead Fan does what ever they can to emulate their undead heroes and heroines....yes that's it, their sole focus is pretending to be undead.
The Undead Fan usually picks a type of undead and focuses on learning spells that help mimic that forms abilities and powers, Vampires are the most common type to emulate with zombies next. Those emulating zombies are often heard telling everyone how each zombie is different and has their own personality, I once had a particularly awful conversation with one "zombie" about the dietary benefits of eating brains.
The Undead Fan can come from any background or social structure although they generally have a excitable persona when it comes to discussing undead and strangely are the most happy type of people when talking about their chosen form of undead. The vast majority of these practitioners are of goodly intent although the odd rare example has on occasion caused some trouble.
Undead Fans are skilled with Arcana, History and Religion and go to great lengths to study their chosen undead and research famous examples and even visit locations they have been sighted at. Otherwise skills vary wildly depending on what the undead form they are mimicking is famed for, it has even been known for those who idolize zombies, skeletons and "non-intelligent" undead to actually refuse to speak or do anything unless specifically ordered to by a person they have randomly chosen to be their creator while those that deem themselves "Vampires" often display aptitude with persuasion and uncanny charisma.
Spell wise they re-flavor their spells to reflect the powers and attacks of the undead; Hold Person becomes Ghoul Touch and is delivered by touch, Vampiric Touch is delivered by a bite to the opponents neck and Gaseous Form is used to show the world that the Undead Fan really is a vampire and Charm/Dominate Person is used to persuade people of their Vampiric prowess or they may have Stinking cloud and proclaim themself to be a Ghast. Disguise Self and Alter Self tend to become among the most used spells in their spell books in order to maintain a suitable appearance. One notable Undead Fan created major problems in a city through use of Geas and Nystul's Magical Aura to create a cult of "Vampires".
Should the Undead Fan survive, and I reiterate that you should kill all these practitioners when you find them, then they try to emulate their chosen undead as closely as possible and seek out any training or abilities that will help them accomplish this although precious few of them are actually brave enough to take the final step and become undead. This fandom often leads them into pacts with otherworldly patrons and into various cults and groups who will entertain the Undead Fans delusion.
Equipment wise, they will try to dress in a way that their undead hero would dress, Vampires wearing expensive well tailored clothes, Mummy's appear covered in bandages, zombies or skeletons using piecemeal or rusted armour and weapons, ghouls or ghast's using unarmed attacks etc. Disguise and make up kits are usually found to help the undead Fan blend in with their Undead Heroes.
As you try to enter the 403rd level of the endless dungeon, the ancient dragon Rylzrayrth rises up to block your path. The dragon has forbidden you from traveling any further.
In other words, you don’t have access to this page.
