So my party wants to destroy the Orb of Dragonkind, what will happen if they do? One of the characters has the resources to do so, so will anything go wrong if they do?
RAW for the orb in DMG doesn't lay out any consequences for destroying the orb and the ways to destroy it are fairly straight forward.
If you mean consequences for the adventure in BG:DitA
it was suggested it could be used as a bargaining chip with Arkhan. It doesn't seem he was aware he was on the same plane with it, so if you destroy it without his knowledge of its existence, I wouldn't see any consequences. If he knows the party has it and witnesses or learns of its destruction at the party's hands. He may hold a grudge. I guess it's possible Tiamat may have some awareness of its existence and maybe she'll tip off Arkhan that the party works maybe not directly but at purposes counter to Arkhan's.

It will probably explode and do damage to everyone within twenty feet equal to the breath weapon of a chromatic dragon (color chosen by the DM) of the oldest age category (Great Wyrm, I think).

I just totally made that up but it sounds cool 😊.
Cool is always possible, at the DM's discretion. Careful what you wish for, a DM could like the idea a bit too much and blast the party with the whole chromatic spectrum of breath effects. Nothing like a TPK preemptive viking funeral to honor your heroes.

This whole thread saddens me because it shows that no one really remembers that these Orbs are from Dragonlance. That was a darn good setting, if not for gameplay then for novels. Man, those were the golden ages...
Dragonlance was a cool setting and I really loved the triangle with Laurana and Tanis and Kitiara (rectangle if you count Lord Soth liking Kitiara). I hope they revive it for 5e.
They will be at a disadvantage in the future if they destroy it. I wouldn't have it explode or anything.
If I were the GM, I'd have an entity (individual or group) make an appeal to the party to encourage them to destroy it. This is open all kinds of questions and be much more interesting than ho hum, we blow the thing up, blahblah.

SAUCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
An Orb of Dragonkind is a plot point in Descent into Avernus if the party chooses to follow The Path of Devils.

Tasslehoff destroys one of the Orbs of Dragonkind in the Dragonlance Chronicles and nothing happened except a bunch of people got mad.

The effect of destroying an orb of dragonkind is that you can't use it any more. It's a kind of useful item for killing dragons.
Very good point
Are you the DM in this situation or part of the party?
