This is my first post on the forums, as well as being pretty new to D&D Beyond in general, so sorry if this is in the wrong place and/or I'm missing information that should be obvious ^^'
I have a ton of characters made with the old, discontinued D&D 4 character builder and thought of importing them to D&D Beyond so I can access them from any device and take advantage of all the features D&D Beyond has. However, when doing the character builder, it doesn't seem to have the option to follow the D&D4 ruleset so I can import my characters seamlessly.
Is there some way to import D&D4 characters or do I have to adjust all my settings to work with the D&D5 ruleset?
Unfortunately no, D&D Beyond only supports 5e so you won't be able to import your old 4e characters here.
Dang... well, how transferable are they? Will I have to build characters from the ground up or can I "import" (as in, just rebuild them) them with minimal changes to the D&D4 counterparts?
You would need to rebuild the characters from the ground up to work in 5e. I'm assuming that you aren't too familiar with the 5e ruleset, so I would definitely suggest reading over the basic rules (available for free) to see how the game has changed since 4th. There are quite a few significant mechanical changes, however the general consensus with D&D fans seems to be that the changes were by and large a good thing, and is largely the reason for D&D's explosion in popularity over the past several years.
