Not sure if this is the best place to ask the question but if I buy the Explorer's Guide to WIldemount will that give me access to all of the character options within the Player's Handbook without having to buy the Player's Handbook. Basically, I don't own the Player's Handbook on D&D Beyond because I have a physical copy however I would like my players in my campaign to be able to create a character without being limited to the few options present in the character builder when you don't have anything purchased. Will just purchasing the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount unlock these extra options from the Player's Handbook or will I need to buy both?
Purchasing the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount will only give you the options found within that book. It will not give you access to options found in a different book, such as the Player's Handbook.
No. Buying the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount will give you access to the content in the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount. You'll be able to use the various species options, the Echo Knight, Graviturgist, and Chronurgist subclasses, as well as all the spells and magic items in the book, but you will not gain access to anything printed specifically in the PHB without purchasing the PHB.
You could purchase PHB-specific options a'la cart to enable players to play their specific character ideas, but that will very quickly add up to simply buying the PHB outright. That may be the best option though, as any a'la cart options you purchase are taken directly off the price tag of the PHB until such time as you've paid your thirty bucks and can just get the whole book.
