Hey guys! soon I’m starting my own group in a homebrew-esque world. I’m playing an oath of vengeance paladin high elf whose city was raided by a fey nobility. My question is: how and who though?
which court would make most sense? I know some fey look upon mortals from the normal realm as beneath them. And what reason could fey have had to raid a high elf city?
Okay. Cool. Well, let's look at some of your options.
First you've got Titania, Queen of the Summer Court, the mightiest of all Archfey. She is the foremost protector of the Feywild. So maybe she sensed that the high elves on this side of the veil were doing some naughty stuff like maybe failing to properly care for their forest, or abusing some of their beasts of burden, or maybe they (accidentally) broke an ancient stone circle that the Fey had been using as a gateway. Whatever the cause, Titania would want to set the matters right. She might send a raid to repair the stone circle, or to punish those who abuse animals (and perhaps abscond with those animals back to the Feywild). She would employ illusion and charm more than combat. Her raid would be designed to get her point across clearly while inflicting as little damage as possible to plants and animals. Either way, her raid would probably not be something for which you would dedicate yourself to a lifetime of vengeance over.
Next you've got King Oberon, Lord of Beasts. He's a more likely candidate. He's a no-nonsense kick-ass type of defender of the Fey. Also, he loves to hunt yet rarely actually kills the animals he hunts. And he prefers hunting stag. So maybe he was out in the Feywild hunting a mighty stag and the stag and he inadvertently crossed over into this realm, and some elven hunters saw it and killed it, so now Oberon is pissed and stages a raid to avenge the fallen creature and to punish the elves for denying him his prize. This raid would be swift, direct, and brutal. And maybe your character has a family member or two who were killed in that raid. That's an option.
Next up you've got either Hyrsam, the patron of satyrs and revelers, or Sqeulaiche (sp?) the Summer Court Jester. They're both very chaotic party goers. If either of them staged a raid into this realm it would be because the high elves were getting a bit too stuffy, boring, and lawful for their tastes. They might want to remind the elves to not take themselves too seriously, lest they lose that magical connection to the Feywild that gave the elves their greatness to begin with. Imagine a cross-realm panty raid. Again - not exactly "vengeance" worthy.
Finally, among the Summer Court, there's Verenestra, lesser deity of beauty, dryads and nymphs. She doesn't leave the Feywild often, but has been known to slip over here to abduct an attractive (temporary) mate. So maybe she popped over for a cross-realm bootycall and convinced or enchanted your king or a prince of your house to go back with her. From her perspective she was going to return him anyhow after she had had enough fun with him, but from your perspective, your prince was basically kidnapped. Or maybe she enchanted a couple of elves, and they started fighting over her, and that basically spread into a big brouhaha that set elven house against elven house, and so you're going over there to set things right. That's a definite maybe.
But! That's just the Summer Court! You've also got Skerrit the Centaur Lord (not to be confused with the great actor Tom Skerritt from Alien and Top Gun fame). He doesn't really answer to anyone, so if the elves over here were failing to protect the forest or harming animals or whatnot, Skerrit could plan a swift and effective raid to punish the perpetrators. Similar results as an Oberon raid. Good option.
But the most likely candidate would have to be The Queen of Air and Darkness. Her realm is a dark and miserable place of pain and death. She often employs undead in her raids. She occasionally sends a group of hunters and monsters called The Dark Hunt out on raids either to punish transgressors, to steal something valuable, or simply to enjoy watching them kill people and spread chaos. She's not a nice lady. She could easily be the reason why you've taken up a vow of vengeance. In fact, I probably should have started with her. Sorry.
I've always been a fan of the elves/fey as dark and depraved because their long life spans make them bored to the point of not caring about the suffering of others. An incursion from the feywild could be a group of these fey being bored and looking for something to amuse them.
Don't forget the simple option of a powerful hag coven. They're technically not-courtly aligned, but if you make the coven big enough, they're basically a new court.
Ok so I'll probably come up with some nobility serving either the Queen of Air and Darkness, or a hag belonging to a Hag covenant. I'm not really a fan of being that super OP hero that literally goes to the Queen's court and kill a God-like creature for vengeance. As for reasons, I'll have to dig into some more. We have a Session Zero planned on friday. However I read that often fey cities (like the Eladrin's) often appear out of nowhere and only stay in the mortal side of the Veil for a bit. Would it be a good plothook for some kind of character arc to have my paladin be on his way to some library or sage or just an ancient scroll in some monsters lair that can predict when Fey portals open and where so I can be in the right place to cross over to their realm to exact my revenge?
Typing it like this it sounds like Aang and the gang on their way to the Ancient library for the solstice information, but that wasn't my intention haha
On a sidenote, do any established gods have a particular dislike for the Fey-kind, or specifically some group in the Fey lands? Kind of a god-patron who bestows my character with his paladin powers?
Fey attacking high elves, huh? Never would have thought of that, considering they are not usually enemies, and (generally) follow similar deities, though that depends on the setting, too. Maybe the high elves "found" (ie, stole) something of high magical quality from them? The Feywild is full of magical things, after all, even more so than the prime material. This artifact would have to be extremely valuable/powerful to warrant an attack, however.
They are distantly related, but that doesn't mean they couldn't have feuds, there's also the Fomorians, I think they are Fae related, and I vaguely remember some beast man race in the Feywild.

high elves have a lot of money and wealth, but fey arnet interested in that stuff, more like magic and lore. (history)

Yh
But high elves have more magic
