Hi, I just got into D&D and I'm currently creating my first PC, there are currently two things that I'm unsure about. First, whilst writing the backstory, I started wondering where, ie in what city/town/region/country, my PC came from? My question is if there is a specific map that I should choose a place from or if it's one that I need to create myself, on my own or with a DM. I read that the Faerun map is most commonly used but I'm not completely sure and if that is the case, I'm not sure how I'd go about finding the right places. And second, I was thinking of possibly multiclassing my PC as a Wizard and possibly rogue. Are there any specific rules on multiclassing? Thank you in advance.
To answer your first question, you would need to discuss with your DM as they will either pick the world or build it themselves. This will affect where your character would be able choose as their home town.
There are rules for multiclassing found in the basic rules. However these are optional rules that your DM may choose to use or not use.
Thank you for your answer! So I'm guessing, and correct me if I'm wrong, that means that I won't be able to completely write my backstory, nor finish my PC, until I get a DM. But I don't have the slightest idea as to where I can find a DM nonetheless a party to begin with.
But nonetheless, thank you once again for your reply. it will greatly help me.

You are mostly correct; there are exceptions, say you find a D&D game discord server or start playing Adventurer's League. Those usually define the world beforehand so you've got information to get started with before even meeting your DM.
An alternative I often do is make some broad bullet points of my characters background and focus on details that can be easily fit into any world. So rather than writing:
They are a worshipper of Bahamut, the Platinum Dragon and hail from the city of Neverwinter
I might instead write
Worships lawful good deity, preferably one associated with paladins and/or dragons
Come from a big city, preferably a fairly prosperous one
Basically thinking in terms of concepts rather than specific details
Hmm ok, thank you! Most of what I had imagined for my PC's backstory were mainly concepts so that helps a lot! Plus, I hadn't even thought that there could be D&D discord servers so that could expand my search when it comes to parties and DMs.
Thank you so much, this has helped me a lot!
Have a good day/night and stay safe!
