That sounds like a great start! One thing to keep in mind is that your wizard will be traveling and working with a group, so if he's slow to trust he'll still need a reason to want to work with the group. Or maybe if someone else demonstrates magic, that might be enough for him to try and reach out.
Why did his town ban magic? Was one of the town’s former residents a wild magic sorcerer whose magic exploded from him when he hit puberty, burning half of the town down? Did an evil dragon riding wizard loot the town? Or something else.
How did he learn magic and how did he become a sage? Did he find a dusty book on magic in a library? Or did he steal a spell book from a traveler who was coming through town and hide it in the forest? Did he become a sage after leaving his home or while he was still living there?
How was he caught doing magic? Did he carelessly light a fire from across the room? Did someone follow him when he snuck out into the woods to study? Was the village attacked and did he cast Sleep to defeat the attackers?
What are his goals?
What does he do now to keep a roof over his head and put food on his plate?
Answer those questions and you’ll have a pretty good back story with lots of plot hooks for your DM.
