This is a wonderous item I thought up, and I would like feedback before I hit share with community, because I haven't done one before. I've tried to think through the possibilities.
Wondrous Item, very rare
A Guard's Chair of Snoozing generally takes the form of a sturdy, but otherwise unremarkable looking chair. The expensive and time-consuming enchantments to create one may be applied to any piece of furniture that can be sat on. Using Detect Magic reveals primarily Enchantment magics within the chair, with Illusion varying in strength, and lingering traces of other magic schools, including necromancy.
Sitting in the chair causes the occupant to immediately fall asleep for 15 minutes, after which they awaken feeling refreshed and have the benefits of the Alert feat for 4 hours. They may be woken as though from a normal light sleep during those 15 minutes, but will not gain the effects of the Alert feat. It will also count as a Short Rest, regardless of when they last had a short or long rest. They cannot use the chair or another Chair of Snoozing until the benefits have worn off.
For the 4 hours following a completed nap in the chair, an illusion of the sleeping occupant remains in the chair, as though cast with the Major Image spell with Spell Save DC 19. Physical contact with the illusion, targeting the illusion with a spell, or any successful attack, will dismiss the illusion, but the chair will immediately scream in the previous occupants voice. This scream will continue for the remainder of the 4 hours, unless silenced with a codeword.
Sitting in the chair during the 4 hours since it was last used will not cause sleep or grant the benefits.
Creatures who cannot sleep, such as Elves, get no benefit from the chair and cannot trigger the illusion. They encounter an unpleasant sensation while seated on the chair, and must make a DC 19 Constitution Save to remain seated for more then 15 minutes, and they cannot trance while in the chair. Creatures who have resistance or immunity to sleep effects, but who are capable of sleep, may make a DC19 Constitution Save to avoid sleeping if they are aware of the chair's nature, but if they succeed they gain no benefits and do not trigger the illusion.
Variations of the Guard's Chair of Snoozing could grant alternative effects, such as truesight, immunity to sleep, resistance to charm spells, or invisibility.
