I just made my first Homebrew race and had it submitted, but was rejected. They said something about the modifiers but this is my first time using this site can some help me understand what I need to do and fix this.
Perhaps I can help? I never tried to create a race, but I did a few monsters and NPCs, and have the basics with D&D rules concerning the modifiers.
Modifiers are usually calculated in such manners: if you take for exemple "Strength" and decide the creature/character has 1, the modifier will be -5. Following that logic, the Player's Books suggest:
1 -> (-5),
2/3 -> (-4),
4/5 -> (-3),
6/7 ->(-2),
8/9 -> (-1)
10/11 -> (0)
12/13 -> (+1)
14/15 -> (+2)
and so on...
Races have special abilities one adds to one's skills: elves have, for example +2 Dexterity.
As I understand it (I may be wrong) you can change the modifiers, but the valors must be change accordingly (it works reciprocally). Or they must stay reasonable...? I don't know if it's a thing, but it would not surprise me. Or perhaps the moderators found a mistake with the modifiers of your race sheet?
I know it may not help much, but I hope it did. ^^'
It might be that you never add modifiers to your race. To do so:
1. Make a Racial Trait using the Add Racial Trait button. Lets go with naming it "Ability Score Increase."
2. Write what you want it to do. "Your Constitution (or whatever) score increases by 2."
3. Save it. Then go down to the modifier button and add a new modifier. Turn the type to Bonus, the Subtype to Constitution score. The ability score to Constitution. Then make the fixed value into two.
Basically, if a trait adds any numerical value to your race, you'll need to put in the modifiers. That way it will update the characters automatically when someone chooses your race.
My race also uses a breath weapon do I have to do the same thing also?
For Breath Weapons, you just need to mark it down as a limited use ability. When you make the trait, theres a slot called "reset type" just mark short or long rest. It doesn't have any inherent modifiers on its own. But that way it will show up on the character sheet in the same spot that the Dragonborn breath weapon does. If you need to, you can look at the Dragonborn within the race editor and see how they do it.
