I was looking through items list and I came across the rope for climbing. After reading the description of this item, I was left with some of the following questions.
- can you command the rope to tangle over creatures?
- can you make the rope take on the form of specific knots?
1: No, as it can only be commanded to move toward a destination or to tie onto objects, and creatures are not objects.
2: I suspect so, that will come down to the DM as RAW, it has two states: "Knotted" and "Unknotted", and knotted is described as having knots every foot.
3: I'd say no, as it weights 3lbs and isnt's sharp. You could probably garotte someone with it, but that's because it's a rope, not magical. RAW, it can't form weapons.
What is interesting about it, however, is that it does not seem to have any limits on the "destination you choose". Meaning, if you are, for example, tracking Todd the Cat Whisperer, you could take out your rope and say "Todd the Cat Whisperer's Scalp" as the destination, and it will start snaking off in the correct direction. It can function as a compass ("North"), and I imagine it could locate the nearest planar portals if you say "The Elemental Plane of Air" as a destination. But that will likely be shut down by the DM, because it's clearly not what the rope is meant to do!
