So, I’m in the process of making a new archetype for the fighter class, and I want it to have spells and spell slots. When I make a copy of the eldritch knight, it works just fine, and I’ve copied everything between the two, but nothing comes up for the new class. How do I go about adding spell slots for a homebrew archetype? (I was looking to use the wizard spell table up to 5th level slots)
You don't add spell slots for the subclasses, since they gain spell slots based on level and a fighter gains up to a maximum of one 4th level spell slot and improve every 3 levels.
Starting with basics, did you check that you marked under the Basic Information section of the subclass what its spellcasting ability is, that it can cast spells, what spells it has access to, and if it knows all spells? Then make sure you have a feature labeled Spellcasting that would start at 3rd level. That's all you need really, I did a quick test and everything had worked correctly on a copy of the eldritch knight. I'd test out a couple things and see how it plays out with a test character.
I had a copy of Eldridge Knight to make sure that I had done everything the same, and it’s just not working on my archetype. I have all the stuff selected, and I have a spellcasting feature. Idk what else to try.
Ok, I figured out. I was calling the feature something different (to work with the point of the archetype). I changed it to spellcasting and it works now.
