i am trying to make a subclass for fighter, and i am having a lot problems trying to figure out how to use the creator. i don't know how to use it and what all the options are for. there seems to be a lot of choices and i don't need all of them and i am confused. any help is greatly appreciated.
really no one is willing to help me learn how to use the subclass creator. i am a army veteran who has a brain injury and a simple question is not being answered by anyone. looks like i will have to go somewhere else to do it as most of the people here have no sense of empathy for someone new to hombrewing here on DDB.
I'm not really familiar with any subclass creator, but I have created a few subclasses on here and I know the basics well enough. I'm happy to help you to the extent of my knowledge either through private messages or in this thread so that others might benefit as well.
I'm usually pretty good about checking this forum in particular, but the last few days have been kind of busy for me in the real world.
yes i have checked the creating subclasses thread and i still don't understand how the system works. i understand the first page i think with the class name and description and the stuff at the bottom and the second page seems similar but the third page baffles me and i don't understand the different options for the subclass features. i would like to have a public record of how to use it so any newcomers will have a reference source if they need it.
apologies for not spotting your post previously - there's a lot of posts on these forums to stay on top of! :)
I'm in the process of writing additional guides / documentation, including for subclasses, but it's not ready yet unfortunately - it's quite time consuming and I'm working on it in the evenings, after work.
Hopefully there will be something useful up by the end of this week though!
What I would suggest for starters is to look at the existing fighter archetypes and see if there is one that is a little closer to what you are trying to do than the rest of them. Then, i would make a copy of that one and just modify the contents of that to fit your needs. That's only a partial solution, but it's a good start and will save you some time and also it will have an example of different things the subclass should get and what level they should get it at.
What I do next is just conceptualize what I want to do without worrying about the mechanics of integrating it into the game. After i have the design phase sorted out, I can go through and edit/delete the existing items and replace them with the stuff I want to make.
Now you can do whatever you want, but i always strive to think about how a good, evil, lawful, chaotic character might fit into my subclass. If it cannot be applied to ANY sex, race, or alignment of fighter, I take a good hard look at why that is. There are exceptions of course, but for the most part, if I am focusing too much on an evil fighter or a fighter who uses a certain kind of weapon, there's a pretty good chance, I'm actually designing a character and just trying to convince myself I'm making a subclass (thanks MellieDM).
My first thought is also to load the fighter full of combat stuff because after all, they are a fighter, right? Well yes, but it's also good to think about what the subclass stands for and try to include at least some level of attention to all three pillars of D&D, which are combat, exploration, and role-play. If you have specific questions, then ask away. If you want to copy/paste any ideas from the subclass in here, then go for that as well. And if you like, I'll try to provide examples of what I'm talking about.
well it has turned into a rogue thing now and what i want to do is a bunch of shadow stuff like creating shadowy areas possibly moving through shadows and give some more weapons proficiencies to it. i tend to fly by the seat of my pants when creating so i don't really have a design process. i have two base classes that i have created on another website and it took forever to get them just right now i am trying to find a game to playtest them to see if they need to be adjusted anymore. but as far as on here that is a good idea of using an existing subclass to base it on and then change it from there i will try that. thanks
i saw two of them in the homebrew section but haven't seen any others and i am looking for something along the lines of the shadow dancer prestige class from 3.5. the problem i have though is that i like the thought of traveling through shadows and casting spells with an area of darkness. while i know there are a couple of spells that do that i was hoping for something that specializes in casting those types of spells.
I've thought about doing a thief subclass that was geared specifically for stealth and infiltration. I didn't look into it further than that though. For something like that, I'd start with a copy of the Arcane Trickster rogue subclass which already has limited spellcasting ability.
Your guy sounds like the perfect nemesis for my Oath of Observation paladin subclass. One is hard to detect, the other is really good at detecting.
sounds like they could be enemies of each other. i was thinking of using arcane trickster as a base but alas i cannot find enough spells that involve darkness and shadows to fill the spell list. any ideas for spells i would like at least 10
10 spells is a LOT for a thief subclass. But here are a few spells to consider that could aid someone in sneaking around, sometimes by way of misdirection:
Cantrips
Minor Illusion
Prestidigitation
Thaumaturgy
Level 1
Alarm
Disguise Self
Fog Cloud
Silent Image
Level 2
Alter Self
Blindness / Deafness
Darkness
Darkvision
Enlarge/Reduce
Invisibility
Misty Step
Pass Without Trace
Silence
Spider Climb
Level 3
Blink
Major Image
Nondetection
Water Breathing
Water Walk
Level 4
Dimension Door
Greater Invisibility
Hallucinatory Terrain
Polymorph
Level 5
Modify Memory
Passwall
Tree Stride
Level 6
Transport Via Plants
Wind Walk
Word of Recall
Level 7
Etherealness
Plane Shift
Project Image
Teleport
Level 8
Animal Shapes
Level 9
Astral Projection
Gate
Those are just the ones I grabbed from the Basic Rules. But at the same time, it's unlikely that a thief subclass would have access to higher than Level 2 spells at maximum, but hey, you're the DM!

Have you checked the "Creating subclasses guide" thead pinned to this forum?

awesome cos i really don't understand how to use the creation system
It's pretty complicated, to allow the degree of flexibility required.
What I am working on is a step-by-step through creating a subclass, so should help!
