Hello I have been working on a Species for a dnd 5.5 species. The idea is that the player can consume a creature and obtain abilities from it. this is the current version of the race. Tell me your thoughts!
Monster Eater. When you eat a creature raw, you gain one of the adaptations under the Adaptation table. Each adaptation has a level requirement, you must be at that character level to select that adaptation. You can only have a number of adaptations equal to your proficiency bonus at a time. If you gain another adaptation beyond your max you lose one of your prior adaptations.
Character Level
Adaptation
1
Natural Resistance. You gain one status or damage resistance from the consumed creature.
1
Natural Weapons. You gain one non-magical or non-weapon attack from the consumed creature.
1
Natural Senses. You gain one of the consumed creature’s senses, excluding true sight.
1
Natural Armor. You gain the consumed creature’s unarmed ac. You can only have this adaptation from one creature at a time
5
Innate Spellcasting. You gain the consumed creature’s innate spellcasting feature. You use the creature’s spell-casting ability for those spells, however, you do not use that creature spell spell-casting modifier. Exp: The consumed creature’s spell-casting ability is Charisma, so you will use your charisma modifier for those spells. You can only have this adaptation from one creature at a time.
5
Additional Mobility. You gain one of the consumed creature’s movement speeds
5
Obtained Action. You can obtain one action, bonus action, or reaction from the consumed creature that does not grant the use of spells.
5
Obtained Trait. You obtain one trait from the consumed creature that does not grant the use of spells.
9
Obtained Ability. You gain a +1 to one of your ability scores corresponding to the consumed creature’s highest score. Exp. The consumed creature’s highest score was strength, granting you a +1 to strength. You cannot use this adaptation to increase one of your ability scores above 21.

I'd like to apologize for how large the table is lol!
It's OP, but if you find a DM willing to balance around it I'm sure it would be fun.
E.g. of OP-ness, at 5th level one could eat some vulture and some bat to gain permanent: Pack Tactics, 60 ft fly speed and 30 ft blindsight.
good point. what would you change to balance it. Perhaps put a 1 min limit on the flying speed per day, or limiting the max range of senses.
