Hi all, not really finding anything in DMG or PH on this, but how much damage would normal fire from let's say a torch cause if used as a weapon against an enemy? I know perhaps the size of the fire could make a difference (e.g. a torch vs landing on a bonfire). What rules do you all follow on this? I have a party that's fighting a troll right now with short sword in one hand and torch in the other, so the damage caused is critical! TIA
Actually found the answer. It's simply found under "torch" in PHB 2014 on page 153 or PHB 2024 page 229. I really overthought this one, lol. I was thinking to look for fire damage, not look on the equipment list for torch.
"On a hit, the target takes 1 Fire damage." So, not much but effective for troll busting.
BTW, looks like alchemist's fire and burning got an update in 2024, "When you take the Attack action, you can replace one of your attacks with throwing a flask of Alchemist’s Fire. Target one creature or object you can see within 20 feet of yourself. The target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw (DC 8 plus your Dexterity modifier and Proficiency Bonus) or take 1d4 Fire damage and start burning."; and "A burning creature or object takes 1d4 Fire damage at the start of each of its turns. As an action, you can extinguish fire on yourself by giving yourself the Prone condition and rolling on the ground. The fire also goes out if it is doused, submerged, or suffocated." (The save and the prone condition are new.)

Improvized weapons like torches generally do 1d4 damage.
