Just starting a new campaign, and a player of mine is really into Madness Combat, so they're thinking of making a character based on a character from that series. Thing is, they want a custom subclass for fighter that revolves around using their fists to fight, instead of ordinary weapons. They also specified that they wanted the subclass to be DEX-based, and not STR-based.
I had the idea of giving the subclass unarmored movement and unarmored defense, a d8 unarmed attack, and maybe the proficiency with improvised weapons used with the tavern brawler feat. Beyond that, though, I have no clue what to do. Could someone provide me some helpful ideas so I can get on track? Anything helps, thanks!
Before answering, is any other player a Monk or planning to Multiclass into Monk?
If yes, then use the Brawler subclass from OneDnD's UA 7 (I think it was this one), it revolves around unarmed strikes, improvised weapons and grappling (which kinda fits the Madness Combat theme), just make sure you allow them to use DEX for the attack and damage rolls. The subclass is not powerful or anything (even if you change it for a DEX focus), but it should meet your player's demands.
If noone else is going to take Monk, then what you did is plenty for level 3 (maybe even too much), for level 7 add the bonus action attack from Martial Arts, a d10 damage die and Evasion, for level 10 add Slow Fall and Unarmored Movement improvement, for level 15 add Purity of Body and Stillness of Mind and for level 18 add Proficiency on all Saving throws and a d12 damage die. They will be playing a bad mix of fighter and monk with no subclass, so this may not be that attractive, but if they want more monk features, tell them to play a Kensei monk (it's the closest thing to a mix between both classes)
