Wasn't sure where to post this; finally decided on the Homebrew subforum, since I really have no doubts as to how the Sending actually works...
So, does anybody else find the spell significantly underpowered? 3rd level spell, for a 25-words-or-less message (and a similar response). Sure, the range is ridiculous (infinite, really... even across planes), but really, which self-respecting spellcaster will prepare Sending instead of any of the other level 3 spells? I guess an Old One Warlock might find a need for it... but then again, are they gonna want to spend one of the very few spell slots they get on it?
I guess what I'm getting at is... does anybody know why it wasn't made a Ritual spell? Has anybody experimented with having it as a Ritual spell? I suppose it could be game-breaking to have continuous access to unlimited range two-way communication, although at 2.5 words per minute, it kinda puts a damper on it. And that is still one other spell the caster doesn't know (except for Wizards).
Only minor issue I see is the speed at which PCs can spread information to allies. As a ritual they can inform the king that the dragon has fled and that he should issue the attack order in 11 minutes after the fight. Otherwise we’re lookjng at a short rest (1 hour) or more (unless they sacrifice a slot to keep sending at hand or use a scroll resource)
This reduced time could make it harder as a DM to explain how the BBEG had time to recover.
Not a big issue but I also see little reason to change rules as written. Players could today buy a couple of scrolls of sending instead of using ritual with same effect
as is this is meant mostly as a DM spell
