Long version: I'm going through all of the modules with the same party and when we finished Out of the Abyss the party had a dragon wyrmling they got by saving it from Gauntlgrym.
They want to keep the dragon and have it as a PC sidekick, so my question is: Does anyone know how to make a dragon PC that isn't OP and can level up with the party? I don't want to just use the statblock because then the dragon starts off way too powerful but then never get more powerful as the party levels and gets left behind.
The sidekick rules from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything would help. While normally it only allows for sidekicks to be up to CR 1/2, I would allow you to trade one sidekick level for one step of CR.
as an Example: the party is level 10, and their dragon companion is a blue dragon wyrmling. since a blue dragon wyrmling is CR 3, and assuming the dragon is the same level as the party, then the blue dragon wyrmling would have 7 levels in one of the sidekick classes.
Now, this solution requires that you be at least level 3, or level 4 for its first sidekick level, so keep that in mind.
I feel like I've worded that horribly, so hopefully you can understand what I'm saying

I'd just use the rule out of Drakewarden Ranger, for their dragon pet.
