for my HB campaign (lvl 8 - 12) I have my party travel all over the world of Faerûn and encounter a lot of different elemental creatures and locations (ice mountain/ volcano). I want to give the fighter a piece of +1 armour that has resistance to a type of damage, but because they encounter such a lot of different types of damaged it feels useless to give him fire resistance armour for the volcano part but then afterwards they go to the ice mountains and it is useless. On the other hand giving him every time they go to a new location a new set of armour also feels weird, so I thought of the following HB item: (FYI they fight a few dragon(-like) creatures and there are a few stores in the world that sell dragon parts. )
Chromatic Dragon Armour (normal)
Armor (splint, heavy), very rare (requires attunement)
Chromatic Dragon Armour is a set of armour with a socket on the chest piece, can accept one dragon scale.
While wearing this armour, you gain a +1 bonus to AC and you have resistance to the damage type that is determined by the kind of dragon scale inserted into the socket. The damage reduced by the armour's resistance is absorbed by the dragon scale inserted into the socket. If the dragon scale has absorbed 100 or more damage, it crumbles into dust and can not be used anymore. (if the scale has 1 hp left and player takes 10 damage of the scale type, the damage is still reduced by 5, which all are being absorb by the scale. After the damage is taken the scale is destroyed).
As an action a player can put a scale into the socket or change the scale in the socket. If a scale is changed after being damaged, it keeps its HP. When no scale is inserted into the armour it is just a +1 armour piece
OR
Chromatic Dragon Armour (simplified)
Armor (splint, heavy), very rare (requires attunement)

You can spend one minute to put a scale into the socket or change the scale in the socket. When no scale is inserted into the armour it is just a +1 armour piece
What do you think about this? Would you use the normal or simplified version? How could I improve the item?
If the normal version is the one, how could I implement the scale's HP into dndb?
Kind regards
