What are people's thoughts about making a few more spells reaction based, in addition to their usual casting method/time. The condition would (loosely speaking) be based on a target of this spell, being subjected to something that the spell would have helped with. When cast as a reaction, Range and Duration would become 15 feet and mostly being instantaneous (no concentration), except as noted below. I think the shortened duration (or reduced number of targets in some case) balances out with having a range.
These are the spells I was thinking about:
Blade Ward (can be cast as a Reaction when a creature within range (doesn't have to be self) is hit by an attack, the duration is instantaneous, possibly causing that one attack to miss)
Guidance (can be cast as a Reaction when a creature within range fails a skill check, the duration is instantaneous, but the bonus retroactively applies to the skill check)
Resistance (can be cast as a Reaction when a creature in range receives damage of the type indicated, the duration is instantaneous, reducing the damage taken by the triggering event)
Bless (retains 30ft range, can be cast as a Reaction when a creature in range fails an attack roll or saving throw; but only that individual can be the spells target, not 3 individuals) (not sure about adding Bane to this)
Heroism (can be cast as a Reaction when a creature in range receives the Frightened condition and/or takes damage, preventing the Frightened condition from being applied, and protection lasting until the start of the target's next turn ; the temporary hit points are only granted once)
Protection from Evil and Good (can be cast as a Reaction when a creature receives the Charmed or Frightened condition from a creature of the given type, preventing the Charmed or Frightened condition from being applied, and protection lasting until the start of the target's next turn)
Protection from Poison (can be cast as a Reaction when a creature receives the Poisoned condition, preventing that condition from being applied, and protection lasting until the start of the target's next turn)
Protection from Energy (can be cast as a Reaction when a creature takes damage of one of the given types, granting resistance to that damage type until the start of the target's next turn)
Thoughts about the above spells being cast as a Reaction? Or under the terms I've given? Any others you think belong on this list (spells that are protective/defensive in nature)?
Calm Emotions in response to fear / charm Shield of Faith in response to someone getting attacked Sanctuary in response to someone getting attacked Ray of Sickness in response to someone attacking Ray of Enfeebleness in response to someone attacking Blindness in response to someone attacking Psychic Lance in response to someone attacking you Entangle in response to an enemy moving Spike Growth in response to an enemy moving Levitate, Fly, Grasping Vine in response to someone falling Healing Word in response to someone being reduced to 0 HP Silence in response to an enemy caster casting a spell Thunderwave when an enemy ends its turn within 5ft of you. Vortex Warp when an ally gets hit by and AoE Dispel G/E in response to an appropriate creature getting summoned Warding Wind in response to being targeted by a ranged attack
You can, but many of them sound pretty powerful, especially if you can use them either as a reaction or an action. I’d personally say make reaction spells based on them. But that’s just me. I’m still rather new to all of this to the point where I haven’t ever used a reaction in my gameplay, so I’m not really rhetorical person to ask.
That should hopefully change soon, as my favorite new 2024 build uses the interception fighting style, but that’s not a spell anyway. It should hopefully work well in conjunction with hellish rebuke though… I hope.
