Hey! I'm a DM who is currently trying to make an unique Axolotl race with it's own abilities, and lore. I've came up with some great stuff, and now I need help balancing them. Here's their current stats:
Ability Score Increase: +2 to Wisdom, +1 to Dexterity
Age: Reaching the closest thing to maturity at 10 years old, but once they reach this point they stop aging.
Alignment: Much like the rushing river they were born from, they are energetic, but laying back. Going with the flow in most causes. Leaning them to the more chaotic alignments.
Size: Growing to the short stature of 2 to 3 feet, and weighing about 30 pounds. Your size is small.
Speed: Your base walking speed is 25 feet.
Darkvision: You have darkvision 60 feet.
Unlife Sense: Your understanding of natural magic, and healing has given you the ability to sense unnatural lives. You can accurately pinpoint and tell the difference between any Undead, or any creature that was one affected by the spells Revivify, or Resurrection within 30ft.
Pure Blooded: Your blood runs pure, and clean like a healthy river constantly filtering out any impurities. You have advantage on saving throws against diseases.
Precocious Face: Your face is so simple, and cute you find it peculiarly easy to get along with others, and get what you want. You gain proficiency in persuasion.
Swift Healer: Your blood seems to instill life in you at every moment even more so than other races. Whenever a dice is rolled to increase your current health total, reroll any 1 or 2's rolled, however you must keep the new roll even if it's worse. You are also immune to the effects of Lingering Injuries as described in page 272 in the Dungeon Master’s Guide
River Born: You are naturally adept at traversing any body of water. You have a swim speed of 40 feet, and you can breathe water.
Languages: You can read, speak, and write Common, and Aquan.
I also got "canceled" abilities which are essentially blindsense when underwater, and adv. on escaping grapple. I want help polishing these guys, and making them enjoyable, viable, but not over powered. What do you think?
That's adorable :) But a few too many features, in my opinion. What you could do is make a Racial Feat to hold the Unlife Sense and Swift Healer traits (since they feel like an extra-cool bump based on lore, similar to official racial feats), and maybe put back a limited blindsense of 10ft underwater.

That's a pretty interesting Idea, I like the concept of giving that to them, especially for Unlife Sense. My only concern would be that they would lack a trait that'll help them stand out. What about a feat like:
+1 to wis or con
*Insert Unlife Sense here but longer sense*
Cleric spells?
Honestly I don't know, I also showed this to one of my D&D friends and he suggested reducing their land movement speed to 20, what do you think?
Dunno if your still active but I love this idea! As a axolotl mom of 3 and currently lesrning more on how to play dnd this is amazing. I feel like they should be very derpy in nature and have some good healing abilities
