First post here on the forums, I’m a brand new GM and for my first campaign I’m looking to recreate Baldurs Gate. As I build out Chapter 1 for my characters I want to give them the chance of finding magic items from the game rebuilt for 5ed.
My question is this, is a girdle of piercing which gives resistance to piercing damage too powerful for a group of level 1 characters? Should I be looking at perhaps just having it increase AC against piercing attacks instead?
I’m trying to judge the relative power of items as I convert them from 2ed to 5th but don’t have much experience or point of reference to base off at the moment.
I'd say that piercing is a common enough damage type that your girdle of piercing resistance should require attunement and be one step rarer than a ring of resistance. That would put its rarity at very rare, suggesting that it's an appropriate piece of loot for an 11th-level-or-higher party. Maybe have it reduce all piercing damage taken by 1 instead?
I hand out Magic Items to 1st level characters all the time, and then buff up my enemies to match their power levels, 5th edition makes it easy to predict what your player will be able to handle statistically. This particular magic item would be considered Rare in my opinion (Armor of Vulnerability is a cursed item that grants a power similar to this, is cursed, and is considered rare). That being said you could tone it down a bit and have this be an item with daily charges. Maybe it halves damage against piercing times per day, and you use a reaction to activate (obviously in reaction to being stabbed with a pointy thing). This would keep it from being too far off the reservation for the low tiers of play.

Armor of vulnerability also grants vulnerability to the other two weapon damage types, hence the name.

Indeed.

Just my 2 cents.
