Some time last year, I was scrolling the dndhorrorstories subreddit and I found one post about a trans-phobic DM making a trans player's female character be reincarnated as a male when they were killed in battle and reincarnated by their party's druid. While I agree that what happened was beyond terrible, it gave me an interesting idea for a new mechanic for the Reincarnate spell. After rolling 1d10 to determine the character's new species, you would roll another 1d10 to determine the character's new gender. An odd number means they will be reincarnated as a male and an even number means they will be reincarnated as a female. Aside from the fact that this idea was inspired by a case of blatant trans-phobia, would it be a good idea?
It makes perfect sense, but you'd definitely have to make sure that everyone's on board and no one would be weird about it, like some of the other horror stories.

I think it's a fun idea, though as Maruntoryx said, you need to make sure everyone's okay with it. Matters related to player character death (including resurrection) are best discussed in detail in a Session Zero before a campaign starts, to make sure everyone's on the same page about it well in advance of any situation in which it might actually happen.
What I generally prefer to do when I'm DMing is: if a player character dies, it is up to that player to decide if the character is going to be resurrected at all, and if so, by what means. And if Reincarnate is being used, I like to give the player the option of picking a species from the list that they think would be fun to play, or let them roll it randomly if they prefer that. It hasn't come up in any of my games so far, but I'd handle gender the same way: let the player decide whether they want to come back as the same gender, or a different one, or choose it randomly.

I have run it that way before as long as all the players agree it can be very fun, you can also roll for age as well. We had a male tiefling wizard reincarnate as a female orc.
