Earlier this week I posted on the rule forum a question inquiring about the existance a magic item, like a ring or an amulet, that grants full access (no charges) to the cantrip Guidance
Similar to the Silver Pendant from BG3.
Nothing of the sort exists in 5.5 so I was wondering 2 things and i wanted to hear your thoughts:
- would it be more balanced to consider it a uncommon or rare item?
- should it require attunement or not?
For reference:
- an Enspelled Dart of Guidance (5.5ed) is uncommon and does require attunement, it is a weapon (not a wondrous item) and only has 1d6 charges that recharge on a LR (no risk of loosing its magic permanently though).
- a Wand of Winter (5ed) lets you cast the cantrip Ray of Frost at will and is a wondrous item, BUT has a bunch of higher level spells (with risk of loosing its magic permanently), so it requires attunement and is considered Rare.
- a Needle of Mending (5ed) lets you cast the cantrip Mending at will (with an action instead of the usual 1 m casting time), BUT is a +1 dagger (not a wondrous item), so it requires attunement and is considered Rare. There is no risk of loosing its magic permanently.
Enspelled Staff is close to what you want. It Requires Attunement by a Spellcaster and has 6 charges restoring 1d6 each day. For a cantrip means it is a Uncommon magical item.
I personly would let you make it a amulet with no other changes here. To be unlimited I think I would push it up to rare but I would still think keeping it to 6 charges at Uncommon would be more game balanced.
