I have been running a path of the giant barbarian for a while, and I want to remake him for 5.5e. Looking into the changes, I saw that the crushing throw feature has been made redundant by an update to the general class: it now applies rage damage to thrown attacks by default. Rather than taking the easy way out and just apply the rage damage twice, I wondered if there might be an alternative. Preferably one that does justice to the giant theme.
Previously, I had my character dual-wield longswords and the like. Pretty cool, and definitely easy for a semi-giant, flavor-wise. But due to other changes (looking at you, weapon masteries), dual wielding is no longer an even slightly reasonable option. Let alone the unappealing idea of my semi-giant being restricted to throwing only tiny hammers and axes.
But then there came Grim Hollow (great book), which introduced the thrown weapon master feat. The most important part is this:
'Multithrow. After you take the Attack action to make a ranged attack roll using a Simple weapon that has Thrown, you can make two additional ranged attacks using Simple weapons that have Thrown as a Bonus Action.'
Unlike dual wielding, this feat is actually good, and you can do all these attacks with the same hand and/or weapon. Much better, even though it means specializing into thrown weapons.
However, this feat restricts you to simple weapons, which still leaves us with puny throwing hammers and axes. This is what I would like to improve upon, by adapting the crushing throw class feature, a feature that was originally intended to improve the thrown option for barbarians. So, let's do that, and get some giant flavor in there while we're at it.
My first intent was to expand the choice of weapon, like so:
'When you throw a weapon to make a ranged attack, you only need one hand to do so. You can throw any weapon (fit to be wielded by a Medium size creature) that has the thrown property, even if it would normally require two hands to wield.'
Doing this means, initially, spear and trident going from d8 to d10. Once you get the elemental cleaver feature, any weapon can have the thrown property, and so you go up to 1d12/2d6, at most. This increase is still less powerful than the scaling flat damage bonus you would get from rage damage (2/3/4).
This solution does not, however, synergize well with the thrown weapon master feat. At most, given this wording, only the bonus action attacks could be made with non-simple weapons. I would like to find a way for the initial attack to also use non-simple weapons. Please help me with your suggestions.
