Hi, first time poster on the forum and was hoping for some feedback for a homebrew race i'm trying to create.
Essentially what I'm trying to create is a race where sentient weapons can manifest into a playable race. I'll leave a link to the google doc with enabled comments. I changed the link to a home brewery Doc since it looks better.
A couple of things that came to mind. Just some notes before you read: these are just my opinions, I am comparing this to other official races, I am by no means an expert, I really like this concept and would love to see it played.
Sorry for the odd formatting bold is acting weird.
Things I like
Rune slot + Manifest weapon : I love these requires a powerful smith or mage, probably some money, and time but allows some flexibility in play style as time goes on.
Alter self : self explanatory, makes sense and not being able to do this at level 1 makes perfect sense.
Wooden weapon, Stealth weapon sub races
Cursed protection awesome idea, you may even want to some up with some sample curses to give a basis for what to expect
All of the optional feats seem fun, spineless is going to make for some interesting role play opportunities.
Things I would add:
Some healing based ability or caveat. Constructs if I remember correctly can't be healed via normal healing magic.
Things I would Change
I am thou, thou art I : If i am understanding you meaning this ability grants 1 of 2 very powerful magical effects based on the wisdom save.
The way I am reading it : you fail the save and you teleport to the thrown weapon or you succeed and the weapon returns to you.
If that is the case this is a very powerful ability with little downside unless you miss and teleport off a cliff or into some other danger. It could even provide some unintended mobility in that way as well by allowing the character to move across large spaces without actually using their movement. I think the concept for this is great, the ability to have your weapon return to you when throw, however the downfall isn't always a downfall. A warrior could take 8 wisdom and use the failure as a way to close gaps instantly.
Body Projection : I have some questions on this one, is this a way to hide in plain sight or are you thinking something similar to a flying sword? If its a stealth option you were going for I really like this from a role play perspective, and my only thought would be how can someone detect you? The flying sword might be interesting but something needs to offset the resistance to all non magic damage to make not being in this form viable as well during combat, AC reduction from loss of armor maybe?
It can be reforged : For me this is an incredibly powerful ability that removes a lot of the danger of adventuring. Generally you are with an adventuring party, meaning unless it is a TPK you have nearly 0 chance of dying permanently since they would need to fail 3 consecutive saves, at least one of which will be their highest possible save if not more than one. The memory loss is honestly negligible, unless your player plays into it really well, as long as your character is willing to listen to the party they can be filled in on what they forgot for all the time they have been with the party plus any information they shared about time before that. On the other hand if the player plays into it like I mentioned this could be a cool plot device, never really trusting these people he/she is with wondering if they are just using him/her and made up his/her past life.
TLDR : I wouldn't personally use this if I was playing this race since most things that give you immortality-like effects are level 18 + class abilities or super rare items.
Holy Blade/ Cursed weapon / Elemental blade :
Resistance to X : Constant resistance to a element is fairly powerful, maybe this could be activated 1 once per short/ long rest and last x amount of time?
Preferred condition: I actually like this concept I would just specify a little more, the advantage being given if in a situation that would normally affect other beings for example a flame weapon on the plane of fire where a human would be rolling checks to survive you are thriving. But this could just be left to the DM at the time of play to determine as well.
As for the things you would change I definitely get what you mean with some of the issues, things I can think of is possibly extending how long it would take for you to manifest yourself again (During which time your able to be grabbed by enemies)
Body projection refers to the way a weapon can create its humanoid form, this in a way would be how a weapon blends in with most races, however there would still be evidence that they aren't natural (Wood body parts, metallic sheen to their skin .etc)
As for "It can be Reforged", I definitely get what you're saying and have been trying to find a way to balance this. It'll probably get the most changes as time goes by.
For the resistance I think i'll keep it as is since a number of official races have resistance to damage types (Aasimar=divine, tiefling=fire)
I do like the idea of expanding on prefered condition and may add it to the other subraces (wood=forest, stealth=night) I also like the idea of them receiving an advantage of some kind so I'll probably expand on this somehow

So what do you think? What can be changed? Can you think of things/sub-races to add?
Sidenote, if you know an artist/ stock image that I can use let me know.
