Someone brought up this concept on a discussion elsewhere and ever since it's been in the back of my mind, bubbling away. Essentially, you do away with the entire Beastmaster subclass and add all of its abilities as core ranger abilities. This would obviously only apply to the PHB ranger, not the revised ranger.
I haven't really played with the idea much yet so was thinking of getting the juices frothing by seeing what other people think first.

"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
Technically, the rules around animals in the party outside of mounts, find familiar, and animal companions are left very vague. Vague enough for a DM to rule pets and animal friends/helpers however they please. As weak as the beast master subclass is, I'd think that at least as far as how you command the beast in battle (at level 3) can be applied to any class without the other benefits.
That said, I'd just copy the revised beast master onto the unrevised ranger. In fact, I already have for players in my group.

I mentioned, in the past, that I made "beastmaster" stuff into spells, like the paladin's Find Mount abilities.
Hmm, that would solve several of the issues with the archetype.
