Hi there! Just a quick heads up: I am a new DM and is my first time creating a world, so apologies for any dumb thing I might say bellow. :P
So I am working on this homebrew and initially it would be a brand new world as most of homebrew campaigns, however, I didn't want to just make an absurd explanation on how my players would get to one of the official adventures settlements whenever we run one. With that in mind I was thinking to make this homebrew living somewhere inside the Forgotten Realms setting. Maybe a lost island somewhere far west of Moonshae Isles, for example. So that way we could have a more logical way to travel to the adventure settlement.
Do you guys have any opinions, suggestions and/or examples on how that could happen? :D
One of the coolest things I read somewhere gave us, the DMs, free reign to do whatever we wanted with official content:
Each adventure, each session, each group exists in an alternate version of the world from any other. If you're into complex science theories: It's like parallel universes where every choice creates a new reality independent of every other.
So yep, in your version of Forgotten Realms there is an island off of the Moonshae Isles which doesn't exist in any other reality. In my version of Forgotten Realms there's steampunk-esq machines that eat arcane magic and replicate asexually when they absorb enough energy.
Have fun, create the reality you envision, and many happy adventures!

That was actually very enlightening, DMThac0! Thanks for taking the time to help me out! :D
