If I recall correctly the are some limitations on what kinds of homebrew D&D creations WotC will allow to be shared publicly, and that includes no new wondrous items or mundane weapons.
If they just let us add and remove weapon properties and change damage dice, attack ability, and ranges, the ability to homebrew new base weapon becomes inconsequential.

I'm just talking about the option to add widely used item types to the lists to make finding / making them more easily. The weapons for instance are in-game, the rules for them are known but no way to post them as such.
This is more of a site-technical issue then anything else since the home-brew section already has loads of the items posted, you just can not select the correct sub-type during creation. So if it was an actual issue with WOTC i'm pretty sure they wouldn't be on here in the first place.

With very few exceptions, brewers on DDB have as many options in their creations as the staff does. What item subtypes specifically are you trying to add? You may be overlooking something.
For starters the weapon and wondrous item types listed in my original post. On a later note i'd like to expand this list with furniture, modes of transportation and many others.
For example in the miscellaneous item creation list you can choose ring but not amulet or necklace while there are a multitude of both posted in home-brew. To me the best option would be to just add those sub-types to the list or for example make the rings section the jewelry section. But the second option wouldn't make it much better imo.
I will admit, "wondrous items" being the catch-all for anything not a weapons, armor, ring, or spellcasting focus is annoying. There are tags for headwear, handwear, footwear, eyewear, and outerwear. You can generally only benefit from one of each of these types of items, that's why the tag exists. And homebrewers can use them too, but it is up to them to tag their item correctly.
As for weapons: knuckles would be an armwear wondrous item, and a scythe would likely be similar to a great axe. And unarmed weapons are contradictory.
With regards weapons - you're correct, D&D Beyond does not allow the homebrew of base weapons.
If a character wishes to use a Scythe, Katana, or Cutlass, it's possible to just select one of the standard weapons and then customize the name of it on the character sheet.
Mike Mearls (a Wizards of the Coast designer for D&D) spent a fair amount of time on his most recent Happy Fun Hour stream talking about why there are only a certain amount of weapons in the game and the philosophy is to just rename an existing weapon.
You can also use the magical item homebrew system to create any amazing fantasy weapons, including adding bonus damage and many other modifiers.
Gonna have to check-out the tags better but not having them as select-able options in the basic creation screen is a miss in my book.
The scythe specifically seems to be an issue due to it translating to 5e badly, maybe with a proper tag i am willing to post them under great-axe but it'd still feel wrong ^^. The term unarmed weapons is a short-hand for weapons usable by monks without losing their unarmed abilities i.e. knuckles, finger blades and per D&D 3.5 ed. kama's.
As an avid creator i prefer to make items outside of normal standards.
Due to this i regularly miss item-types when creating therefore the request for the addition of more item sorts / types.
The ones missing out of the top of my head are :
Weapons : Scythe, knuckles and any other unarmed type weapons.
Item --> wondrous item --> boots, bracers, head-wear, amulets, necklaces, belts, girdle's for starters.
Being able to search specifically for these item (types) would also be a much needed addition.

I am one with the Force. The Force is with me.
Limiting homebrew isn't something i expected to see on this site.
If this is correct it seriously lowers the usability of the site for my games.
I'm going to have to rethink getting the digital books / subscription here ; /

I still wish we could do more with (magic) weapon homebrews though, for example change damage types, damage dice, and remove properties.
