My campaign's nearing the end of the first chapter of my adventure, the Sunless Citadel, and with the boss being the tree-sealed fey vampire, Gulthias, I'd thought to do something different regarding him. Previously, I'd had a dryad corrupted and forced into an unnatural dying state by a vampire dagger, impaled to a tree to form my previous homebrew creature (the Corpseblighter), which largely focused on keeping players away from itself while gating in Blights to fight for it. Gulthias has had, presumably, a -long- time to prepare, to gather strength, and to ponder on just how he would repel adventurers if they happened to make it through his goblins, blights and thralls. Then I remembered the Sunless Citadel was originally a shrine to Ashardalon, and Gulthias being a worshipper of said dragon, I got an idea. The fight will begin with Belak and the thralls (Sharwyn and Braford)... but as they're confronted, Gulthias will gather the plant matter, bark and vines and all, to his tree and literally build himself a dragon out of it.
It'll be a group of level threes, numbering six players, that fights him. I think I have him balanced appropriately to be a good challenge for the end of the first chapter, but I'm open to ideas on refining him.
