I have been trying to expand upon a homebrew idea that I had for giving clothes AC.
Initially, I had thought of giving all clothes an AC of 0.5 per item, rounded down and maxed at a total of 2.
So wearing a full set of clothes would give you a +2 AC.
However, I have decided that I don't want everyone to have a +2 to their AC and instead, I would adapt this for casters (who usually can't wear armour)
So my new idea is this.
Class specific robes that can only be equipped by Sorcerers or Wizards. These robes are made out of a velvet material and can be made into most shapes (to fit different forms and styles)
The robes provide the same benifit as Mage Armour but doesn't require the use of a spell slot and is a semi-perminent boost - that being as long as the robes are worn, the caster gains the benifit of having cast Mage Armour on themselves.
Can I have your opinions please.

Well mage armor is better than any non-magic light armor, as good or better than +1 light armor, and as good as most +2 light armor. So we are talking about a magic item of very rare quality suitable for ~level 10 PCs.
There is elven chain which spellcasters can wear. And using this as a base, a +1 studded leather that ignored armor proficiency requirements would only be a rare magic item that a ~level 5 PC could find.
I think a robe that required attunment by a wizard, sorcerer, or warlock that let them cast mage armor at will (or once per long or short rest) would be a rare magic item.
