Me and my PC's have been looking to run a campaign where they're monsters from various manuals. Now I'm gonna restrict them to danger lv 10 or under and some stats will be lost from curses making some more "humanoid". Looking for balancing advice on stats for the beast so a danger 10 isn't far to op vs a danger 3 or so. Got enemies dialed in since they'll be fighting peasent villages first then empire. But struggling to balance the PC's while keeping racial bonuses.
That will depend a lot on what they end up playing. Volo's guide already has several monster races (goblin, kobold, orc, etc). And I can't think of many monsters over CR5 that would make sense as a PC.
Lol why it's so tough but I do see your point on the cr5. I may run a oneshot for my crew with some lv3 monsters restricted to cr5 races as a test run for this. I took volo into consideration and may limit them to creaters from that but I kinda want to see what they come up with outside of the guide for the heck of it
