I am interested in making a detective character, but I cannot find such a subclass on the site. I found a character template on an old D&D wiki and tried to apply it to the D&D Beyond homebrew creation but I don’t understand how to do it right. Can anyone help me with this?
I'm not great at homebrew so can't help you much there, but the class bears some similarities to the inquisitive subclass of rogue. If you do decide to homebrew it, I would still suggest rogue as the base class since it's the one with the best ability in that area.
I was thinking of using Monk as the base class, because of Peter Sellers’ Pink Panther movie series in which the ace detective who only used his hands in a fight (no weapons) and was very Sherlock Holmes-like in detection, inspection, persuasion, and disguise. (But the character, Detective Clousseau, was very unintelligent while being able to convince everyone that he was brilliant.) I think Dick Tracey also used his fists a lot. But I’ve no idea how to navigate the homebrew creation stuff. I think such a character would be quite fun.
If your wanting to make a monk detective, I'd say try to use the inquisitive as a baseline then translate it to monk. Also try looking into Matt Mercer's Cobalt soul too.
I like the Cobalt Soul ideas. But I don’t know how to make such a detective class with the D&D Beyond homebrew creation templates. I will check around and see if there’s any guides to making a homebrew.

This is where I found the template:
